On Being Two Beings

One of the main struggles with manifesting deliberately is the conflict of being two distinctly minded beings with very different goals contained in one human.

You are two beings:

  • You are a cosmic being with a goal of expansion and experience.

  • You are also a mammal, prioritizing animal stuff like eating, sleeping, pooping, making babies, and otherwise staying alive.

If you feel like you have a battle raging inside of you, I’d say that’s a pretty apt description. Half of you needs to be safe [Animal-Self]. The other half just wants to put it all on the line [Cosmic-Self]. This is how we’re wired. Being a human is hard.

“Cosmic-Self gives zero fucks about safety and will sacrifice nearly all of the things the Animal-Self holds dear (safety, acceptance, and fitting in with the community) to get what it wants.”

The Animal-Self wants to use the life you have to be safe and stay alive. That means it prefers, and sometimes insists, that you stick to the habits that you know. It is sent into panic mode by the suggestion of trying new things or having new experiences. That really sucks, because the Cosmic-Self wants to experiment, sample, and explore.

Cosmic-Self gives zero fucks about safety and will sacrifice nearly all of the things the Animal-Self holds dear (safety, acceptance, and fitting in with the community) to get what it wants. Cosmic-Self doesn’t need a “rational” reason. It HAS a reason – to “experiment, sample, and explore”. What it wants often seems to be without rhyme or reason because the experience IS the point. If you consider the things on most people’s bucket lists, you’ll see that things like swimming with sharks, meeting Tim Gunn, or having tea at the Savoy are not really biologically useful. They were clearly not the Animal-Self’s idea.

Sometimes things the Animal-Self would consider to be horrible experiences are simply things the Cosmic-Self wants to sample. The Animal-Self would avoid nearly all negative emotions, but the Cosmic-Self seems to be more than willing to experience a broken heart, rejection, failure, and even injury. Sometimes the pain IS the experience the Cosmic-Self wants to have! It’s bananas!

This is an important conversation to have at the beginning of a Law of Attraction education because the struggle between the two parts of you is normal and should be anticipated. Part of you is going to want to reach out and grab all of the experiences you want in your life. Part of you is going to freak out that you are moving outside of the well-defined Safe Zone. And it’s going to happen EVERY SINGLE FUCKING TIME you want something that is unfamiliar to your current life, especially in the beginning.

  • Part of you wants to fall in love, part of you is terrified of rejection or to alter a relationship beyond recognition (“What if I tell her I love her, and it ruins our friendship?”).

  • Part of you wants to move to Paris, but the other part doesn’t want to leave the familiar.

  • Part of you wants to display your art, but the other part is afraid of being rejected by your tribe.

  • Part of you wants a million dollars to play with, and give away, and leave a legacy, but the other part isn’t sure what it might be like to have so much money, or who they can trust.

These struggles are going to be inherent in every expansive manifestation you make. They’re the nature of the beast that is you.

“If the incessant back-seat arguing of your Selves sounds discouraging, keep your chin up.”

As an aside, I don’t believe we are anything as simple as a body + a soul. I believe your physical body was designed to accommodate your cosmic mind. We heal from injury and emotional pain; we adapt and then want more; we need variety of movement, food, information, activity, and everything else to thrive. A human body can live with the Animal-Self’s agenda, but not optimally. Most people who live a safe, repetitive life are miserable and aching for something more. The frustration they feel is the Cosmic-Self!

If the incessant back-seat arguing of your Selves sounds discouraging, keep your chin up. This kind of knowledge will help you navigate the pitfalls. There are things you can do about the constant arguing of your internal Odd Couple. As you adjust to receiving what your Cosmic-Self wants to sample, how your Animal-Self reacts to change will adjust, too, so the parts will continue to argue, just about the new changes that you are making.

Your Animal-Self tends to be extremely distrusting, and new experiences are usually considered very dangerous. As you practice creating what you want, and demonstrate that you are safe in the receiving of it, your Animal-Self will find it easier to adapt to change, and it will fight significantly less. That requires time, patience, and persistence in your work. Don’t stop creating just because part of you gets bent out of shape.

There is one other reason this information is important to consider. Good things are just going to happen to you once you’re on a roll with your LOA practice. All the time. The Animal-Self part of you is going to fear and hate that things just show up, so part of your LOA practice is going to forever be making peace between your Animal-Self and your Cosmic-Self. I can’t think of a time that I heard another Law of Attraction teacher mention that we’re are hard wired to reject the things that just show up in our lives as well as the things that we’ve worked for with action and intention, so it’s likely that this is the first time you’ve considered this idea and its effect on your manifestations.

I’ll have some specific NLP exercises you can do to put these two parts together, to get them both working toward your goals, later in the week. For now, ask your questions on the Facebook page or shoot me an email at theaxioncenter@gmail.com.
